Dr. Gerardo Villa Martinez | Photonic Physics | Research Excellence Award

National Polytechnic Institute, Mexico

Dr. Gerardo Villa Martínez is a graduate of Cinvestav’s Physics Department, where he earned his Ph.D. and Master’s degrees following a Bachelor’s in Physics from Universidad Veracruzana, giving him deep familiarity with the institution’s academic standards and research culture. His research focuses on the optical characterization and theoretical modeling of semiconductor nanostructures, including II-VI and III-V materials, with applications in optoelectronics. He has led multiple projects on III-V heterostructures for infrared devices, energy polymer composites, and physics education tools, and has published ten JCR-indexed articles on materials such as GaSb, InGaAsSb, and ZnCdSe/ZnMgSe quantum wells. He is co-inventor of a patented alkaline biodegradable method for GaSb surface passivation and serves as Guest Editor for a special issue in Nanomaterials. Dr. Villa Martínez has collaborated extensively with national and international researchers on semiconductor heterostructures, contributing to epitaxial growth, optical and structural characterization, quantum well development, and infrared device applications, and is recognized as a Young Academic member of the Mexican Academy of Sciences.
